Let your imagination travel to the fabled city of Venice while stitching this multi-media embroidery composition. Venice – Spirit of Place depicts some of the memorable landmarks that define this most exotic of Italian cities. A gondola awaits to carry one to the alluring attractions: the beautiful church of San Marco, known world wide for its fabulous mosaics; the famous Rialto Bridge, the Palace of Doges, the Bridge of Sighs, and a Palazzo which belongs to a noble family. Half concealed are masks—for the carnivale. They don’t define Venice, but they do embellish it.
Dominating the piece is San Marco, the ancient and grand cathedral of Venice. It is worked in most appropriate Mosaic stitches, in a variety of metallic hues to interpret the shape and the design of the cathedral, and to hint at the glorious mosaics inside.
The pink brick patterns of the Palace of Doges are interpreted in a number of needlepoint stitches, defined and embellished with the versatile whipped back stitch, perfectly interpreting the fine lacy stonework of Venice. The Rialto Bridge is interpreted in geometric stitches to suggest the intricate brickwork. The Palazzo is defined by closely detailed backstitching and filled with a subtle stitch to effect stucco. The Bridge of Sighs is done in blackwork, as is the slight suggestion of Santa Maria della Salute. The gondola is worked in outline stitch to express its sleek lines. And the masks are subtly backstitched into the canvas with a matching thread.
